Magalis Garcia dare and broke all the schemes in the world of fashion designing and sewing his collection for autumn-winter 2010, presented last Friday as part of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
This Puerto Rican designer chose an open space called the Meatpacking District of Manhattan, features 22 designs made by herself without the help of seamstresses.
“There are many designers who say they are designers, but do not know how to sew a skirt,” said Magalis.
For the collection, Garcia was inspired by his mother and old photographs of her family, “I like to dress women in a classic style but at the same time America, through which it can enhance your figure,” he said.
The line focused on cocktail dresses and long for the night. textile fabric such as wool, silk and organza. Regarding colors, Magalis visited different museums to admire the paintings of the masters, through which he could acquire different ideas to create new shades. Magalis Garcia was born in Norwalk, Connecticut, where he grew up in a household in which prevailed the rich culture of Puerto Rico, her parents have unfounded. Always looking for new directions, Magalis has explored a variety of media in recent years, including painting and sculpture at the Art Institute of Maryland. Garcia found the perfect outlet for her artistic expression when he finally discovered he could bring his creations to sewing she learned from her mother.
Fashion was a very direct way to reach their people and really express themselves, so Magalis moved to New York and polished his skills by studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology, while in the evenings watching the eclectic style of New Yorkers.
In practice, the designer has collaborated with fashion houses like Anne Klein and London Fog. In 2001 he risked and debuted with a line of accessories for a traveling exhibition at Henri Bendel, after a major response was expanded under the name of “Detox” and “Detox clothes.” His work was very popular and sold in high-level boutiques in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, New Orleans, Miami and Puerto Rico.
